Please note that if you are coming from one of these countries or have a layover of more than 12 hours in a country where yellow fever is present, Madagascar will require proof of vaccination against this disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In general, vaccinations such as typhoid, hepatitis A and B, tetanus-diphtheria, measles, rubella, chickenpox, and, in some cases, rabies are usually recommended for travel to Madagascar. Malaria prophylaxis and strict measures to prevent mosquito bites are also advised. <\/span><b>Check with the international vaccination center in your area.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why is it important to pack a first-aid kit with special care when traveling to exotic destinations like Madagascar?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Traveling to distant and less common destinations requires taking extra precautions when it comes to your travel first-aid kit. Health, environmental, and safety conditions may be very different from what you&#8217;re used to. Here are the main reasons:  <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>1. All of these occurred within the last two years. Although these are few cases, we believe it is always important to consult our nearest Center for Tropical Medicine to receive the necessary, up-to-date information and take every precaution. Tuberculosis (TB)<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Destinations: Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Eastern Europe.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transmission: Through the air via coughing or sneezing by infected people.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prevention: Avoid close and prolonged contact with infected people and get the BCG vaccine (in some countries).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Very common in Madagascar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10. Bubonic and pneumonic plague.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seasonal outbreaks still occur, particularly in the central highlands (e.g., around Antananarivo).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>11. Schistosomiasis (bilharziosis):<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nIt can be contracted in contaminated freshwater.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>12. <\/b><b>Gastroenteritis and bacterial\/parasitic diarrhea:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nVery common, especially among travelers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>13. Intestinal Helminthiasis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n(Roundworms, hookworms, etc.).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>14. <\/b><b>Measles:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nThere have been serious outbreaks in recent years due to low vaccination coverage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>15. Tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\nIt is important to keep your vaccinations up to date.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>MALARIA<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>What is malaria?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is a serious and potentially fatal infectious disease caused by a parasite and transmitted primarily through mosquito bites. Initial symptoms may resemble those of the flu: fever, chills, headache, muscle aches, and fatigue. Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea may also occur. A yellowish discoloration of the skin and eyes usually indicates a loss of red blood cells (anemia).   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is it contagious?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. Malaria is not spread from person to person, like a cold or the flu, nor is it spread through sexual contact. However, an infected mother can pass it on to her baby before or during childbirth. Transmission through blood transfusion is uncommon.   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Will the preventive treatment cause me any side effects?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is generally well-tolerated, especially if you follow the instructions for taking it. And even if there are minor side effects, it is always better to take the medication than to suffer from malaria. In the highlands, transmission is more erratic and prone to sporadic outbreaks.   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Plague (bubonic and pneumonic) \u2013 endemic, monitored by IPM<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Classic seasonality: The \u201cfavorable\u201d season runs from September to April, with most cases occurring in the Central Highlands (&gt;, 700\u2013800 m).  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IPM is a long-standing authority on the plague and regularly publishes findings on its seasonal and geographic patterns in Madagascar.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Measles \u2013 Periodic Outbreaks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Following the major epidemic of 2018\u20132019, the country continues to report outbreaks in various districts. In 2024, the WHO\/Africa weekly bulletins reported thousands of suspected cases by mid-year and ongoing transmission in several regions.   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Rabies \u2013 endemic (primarily canine)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IPM houses the Rabies Treatment Center (CTAR) and confirms that rabies remains endemic; it coordinates national diagnosis and provides post-exposure vaccination (no appointment necessary).  <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Schistosomiasis (bilharziasis) \u2013 very high prevalence in numerous districts<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IPM provides information and is actively working to address schistosomiasis, a major public health problem caused by contact with infested freshwater.  <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recent research data show prevalence rates &gt;of 50% in specific areas (including co-infection with S. mansoni and S. haematobium), and &gt;of 50% even among pregnant women in the Highlands.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Rift Valley Fever (RVF) \u2013 a zoonosis with documented outbreaks<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It reemerged in 2021 with outbreaks in \u22655 regions; the IPM, the Ministry of Health, and collaborators published analyses in 2024 documenting its circulation in humans and animals, as well as entomological aspects of the outbreak. Risks are linked to rainfall, livestock, and mosquitoes.   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Arboviral diseases (dengue, chikungunya, Zika) \u2013 risk and sporadic circulation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IPM maintains a research program on arboviruses. In the Indian Ocean, dengue and chikungunya activity has been high (Comoros\/Mayotte\/R\u00e9union), posing a risk to Madagascar (Aedes vectors present, limited surveillance).   <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Poliomyelitis (cVDPV1) \u2013 recent outbreak that has already been contained<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Madagascar brought the outbreak of vaccine-derived poliovirus type 1 (cVDPV1) to an end in 2025, after an independent assessment confirmed that transmission had been interrupted; WHO\/Africa officially announced this.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Typhoid fever \u2013 high incidence<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Multicenter studies in sub-Saharan Africa (including Madagascar) place the country among those with an incidence of &gt;100 per 100,000 per year; it is a major cause of febrile bacteremia and is associated with water and food.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Leptospirosis \u2013 Underdiagnosed but Present<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Studies in Antananarivo document high rates of infection among rodents and point to underreporting of human cases due to diagnostic challenges; the risk is higher in urban flood-prone areas with poor sanitation.  <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Quick Tips for Travelers<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><b>Highest-risk season for malaria<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: in most of the country, February\u2013May (peaking in March\u2013April); on the east coast, the peak occurs earlier (~February). He vivido y compartido la inmensidad del desierto con los tuareg en el sur de Argelia, mi pa\u00eds de acogida durante cuatro intensos a\u00f1os que me aportaron experiencias \u00fanicas y momentos m\u00e1gicos.
