NAMOROKA NATIONAL PARK

Namoroka National Park is located in the northwest of Madagascar, in the Boeny region, within the Soalala district, and occupies over twenty-two thousand hectares combining dry forests, calcareous tsingy, seasonal watercourses and open savannahs. The geology of the site dates back more than 160 million years when calcareous sediments formed on the Gondwana supercontinent and subsequently uplifted and eroded to give rise to the maze of peaks and gorges we see today. The fact that the area has remained so inaccessible has contributed both to the conservation of unique species and to the isolation of local communities and the traditional practices of the Sakalava peoples who revere certain parts of the territory as sacred.

The first official designation dates back to 1927 when the area was established as an Integral Natural Reserve under state guardianship which implied strict protection of its dry forests, tsingy and karst cavities. Decades later, in 1966, the area was reclassified as a Special Reserve which extended its conservation status and recognized the need for management adapted to the remote and sensitive environment and it was finally in August 2002 that the area received National Park status.

This impressive relief, formed by limestone outcrops carved by erosion, creates unique habitats that harbor one of the most representative biodiversities of the dry climate of western Madagascar. The park's flora includes more than five hundred plant species, many of them adapted to the arid conditions and calcareous soil. The dry forest includes trees such as Delonix boiviniana, Neoharmsia madagascariensis or Hildegardia erythrosiphon, as well as several species of baobabs, among them the red baobab Adansonia rubrostipa whose reddish trunks and twisted shapes bring a strong visual character to the landscape. There are also numerous xerophytic plants with reduced or thorny leaves, as well as endemic species exclusive to Namoroka that do not grow anywhere else in the country.

The park's fauna is equally remarkable. Nine species of lemurs have been recorded, including diurnal lemurs such as Eulemur rufus, Van Der Decken's sifaka, Propithecus deckenii or the shy gray lemur Hapalemur griseus, each with its own behaviors and dynamics. At dusk and during the night, the forest reveals other inhabitants, such as the sportive lemur, Lepilemur ahmansonithe gray mouse lemur Microcebus murinus and Peters' mouse lemur, Microcebus myoxinus, while the dwarf lemur, Cheirogaleus medius usually appears with the arrival of the austral summer in October as well as the elusive aye-aye Daubentonia madagascariensis.   Birds are well represented with over one hundred species observed, including several western endemics and some globally threatened species that find refuge in the park's canyons and wooded areas. Reptiles are equally diverse with over thirty species recorded including geckos, chameleons, snakes and lizards specialized in dry environments. Namoroka is also one of the most diverse places for bats in Madagascar, with more than twenty species that use caves, cavities and subway galleries as shelter. The presence of the fossa Cryptoprocta feroxthe main carnivore endemic to Madagascar, confirms the ecological importance of the area.

All these elements make Namoroka a destination of great interest for travelers seeking authentic nature, uncrowded experiences and an in-depth approach to the arid ecosystem of western Madagascar. Its tsingy form a natural labyrinth that offers spectacular walks and privileged wildlife viewing points, especially at sunrise and sunset. The combination of unique flora, endemic fauna and landscapes of strong visual impact make it one of the most special and lesser known parks in the country, ideal for adventure tours, trekking and trips focused on biodiversity.
