Trekking in Madagascar: Nature and Adventure
Discovering the world on foot, returning to the ORIGINS. Sustainable Adventure is our main focus, our reason for being, our travel philosophy. An organic, simple journey, where you have the time to observe and take the pulse of our planet, to provoke encounters that would otherwise be unthinkable.
We love the silence and the sense of freedom that open spaces, peaks, and even the dense Malagasy forests offer. Climbing mountains in the Andringitra or Marojejy range, living with animist tribes in the Zafimaniry country, exploring the lush Masoala rainforest, or penetrating the canyons of the unknown Makay massif are experiences that can only be had on foot.
Why go trekking in Madagascar?
Trekking through the most remote areas of Madagascar is undoubtedly something that leaves its mark. To go further, you have to go on foot. And often, seeing the world from above makes all the difference.
The island’s trekking options are endless, as only 30% of the country is equipped with roads and cycle paths. Add to that the fact that it’s one of the most mountainous islands in the world, and the range of itineraries available for the Madagascar Trek is incalculable.
And finally, combining the landscape with the people, since trekking in Madagascar allows us to spend the night in animist villages and settlements that still preserve the traditional way of understanding and living life for over a millennium.
Scheduled Trekking Routes in Madagascar
We offer various trekking routes, always accompanied by our specialized guides. Some climb mountains almost 3,000 meters high, such as Mount Ibity or Pic Boby, others explore National Parks such as Masoala or Isalo, and some are lesser-known, such as the trek through jungles and mountains from the Zafimaniry animist villages to the Indian Ocean.
For those seeking more intense challenges, this coming year we will offer the TransMakay Trek, the result of our love of trekking. A true challenge that requires excellent physical condition, great autonomy, and a great spirit of sacrifice.
This trek would be dedicated entirely to exploring the unknown Makay massif on its northern and southern slopes, a majestic work of nature and a sanctuary for some of the most curious species on the planet. The erosion of the massif has carved deep canyons hundreds of meters high, home to hundreds of species of fauna and flora that have yet to be catalogued by science.
Life has developed over millions of years, untouched by the rest of the planet, without human presence. Magic works in every corner of this spectacular massif, nature in its purest form.
Trekking in Reunion Island: Unforgettable routes between cirques and volcanoe
The island of Reunion is a volcanic island in the Indian Ocean that allows us to undertake various trekking programs through valleys and mountains, ascending (among others) to the highest peak in the Indian Ocean, the legendary Piton des Neiges volcano, at 3,070 meters high.
We will travel 13 stages along trails through mountains, crossing tropical forests, as well as valleys still inhabited by small farming communities, and ascending the island’s main volcanoes, such as the aforementioned Piton des Neiges or the famous Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active on the planet. This trek is considered one of the most beautiful in the world.
Trek The Red Island: For lovers of the less explored areas of Madagascar
This would be the “Bestseller” of our trekking, which combines four very varied spaces such as the rural area of Vakinankaratra (Ascent to Mount Ibity), the villages of the Zafimaniry ethnic group, declared Oral Heritage of Humanity, the Andringitra National Park which is part of the Antsinanana Humid Forests, also declared World Heritage and its Pic Boby (2658m), the unexplored canyons of the Makay massif, a majestic work of nature and the buttresses of the Isalo National Park massif and its emblematic savannah to flow into the Mozambique Channel.
The combination of all these spectacular spots makes this trekking the riskiest option at Indigo Be.
