WHO WE AREOur historyOUR VALUESRESPONSIBLE TOURISMOUR TRAVELSOur team
We're sure you expect us to tell you who we are, but we're going to tell you just the opposite, what we are NOT:
A classic travel agency
A copy/paste of existing programs
Indolent, we act for what we believe in, day and night, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Opportunists, we respect the particularities of the country that welcomes us, because without them, none of this would exist.
100% sustainable, but we're improving every day to reach 99%.
Mediocre, we have boundless creativity and imagination.
Superficial, everything that moves us and excites us is present in our travels.
Indifferent when it comes to protecting our island.
Of course, we're not perfect, nor do we pretend to be.
And now, wait, here come the curves...
Because we're a bunch of crazy enthusiasts who thought one day we could change the way we travel. We were united by a love of nature and people, curiosity, restlessness and a thirst for knowledge. Not to mention the fact that we've all been enchanted by Africa, and we're still here... hooked.
Our agency is a pure source of inspiration. A space that combines creativity, passion and a love of work well done, respect, balance and collaboration between people and their environment.
We show the different realities, the good and the not-so-good, in order to understand positions that are sometimes beyond our understanding.
We create bonds between our expedition members based on shared experiences, and build communication bridges between locals and travelers with extreme ease.
We're perfect hosts when it comes to introducing knowledge-hungry travelers to the island, and best of all, we have a great vibe :)
Discover the world on foot, get back to the ORIGIN. Sustainable adventure is our main objective, our raison d'être, our travel philosophy. An organic, simple journey, where you have the time to observe and take the pulse of our planet, to provoke encounters that would otherwise be unthinkable.
We love the silence and sense of freedom that Madagascar's wide open spaces, peaks and even dense forests provide.
1997-2006
The beginning of everything
In 1997, we embarked on an adventure of which we had no idea the consequences. Publishing a travel magazine was a dream for a photographer like Sylvia and a travel writer like Sergi. And we achieved it, because if there's one thing that characterizes us, it's our determination.
Mozambique, Syria, Senegal, Kenya, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Chile, Argentina, Uganda, Ethiopia, Turkey, Cape Verde, Jordan... and countless other countries in which we've had the privilege of working.
As it couldn't be any other way, the magazine was called Nómadas. Until we were absorbed by a publishing house and ceased to exist shortly afterwards.
Our entrepreneurial spirit didn't stop there. Our first love was Algeria, and we spent four intense and wonderful years guiding expeditions and camel treks across the Sahara desert in this extraordinary country.
From those years, we keep the indigo blue of the Tuareg turbans which, with the "Be" (much or great in Malagasy), constituted the "Grand Bleu", the great Indian Ocean.
In psychology, indigo blue is the most powerful hue and is associated with creativity and imagination.
Many people have followed us on this adventure, such as Jaume and Josep María; Joan Biosca, with whom we've shared some great moments and whom we always keep in mind; María, who is always at the forefront as communications manager; Rafael, who teaches Spanish in our training courses. And we hope to expand our family, because what really counts is people.
Indigo Be was born in the Algerian Sahara.
2006-2024
The origins of our adventure
We've always been dreamers. Later, we decided to put our dreams into practice. And so INDIGO BE was born, but that's a well-known story.
Life sometimes has surprises in store for us. The times of travel always surprise us in the middle of the adventure. Since our beginnings. We arrived and we saw, we fell in love each in our own way, we evolved on an island that continues to surprise us every day.
We move through life following the natural order of things, grasped with simplicity and effortlessness.
That's how INDIGO BE grew up, and that's how we grew up too. Originally, it was an adventure. Lately, our experience can easily be likened to a journey through the dreams of so many travelers who have been guided by our hand across the island of Madagascar over the years.
The road we've travelled hasn't been easy, but it has had countless rewards; this season has been particularly gratifying, in every way, and that makes us proud of a job well done, of the pleasure of things done with love. We continue to love our work, we continue to be delighted when we help travellers discover impossible landscapes, we continue to smile silently when we see the expression on some customers' faces as they say goodbye at the airport, we continue to be satisfied that our partner travel agents often congratulate us for the services we offer, for the quality of our services, for our organization dedicated to the satisfaction of their travellers.
The road we've travelled has been an adventure. We've lived it together, and today we're growing even more simply, expanding our destinations and offering our services with combined programs in Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles.
The philosophy is the same, the means are growing... We're bigger, but we're still the same. The road we've travelled has made us better: older, wiser, just as enthusiastic.
From day one, we've been committed to sustainable human development, adventure ecotourism and environmental preservation, and above all to respecting local populations. Without them, Madagascar would not be the same, and our work would be different.
Keep dreaming with us.
Interacting with respect, listening to and empowering local communities can be the common thread between the two worlds. It's so important that it should be one of the main objectives of our trip. A conscious action that, I assure you, has a brutal positive impact.
Contributing to the conservation and sustainability of these remote regions and the ethnic groups who live there is the cornerstone of Indigo Be's philosophy.
And as always, we'll continue to work on improving our itineraries and creating new experiences that will resonate with you and the local population.
Rebirth, resurfacing, innovation... reconnecting with what gives us butterflies in the stomach: offering memorable experiences.
Living in Madagascar is a transformative experience, a journey through time. I guarantee you'll get a kick out of it.
Indigo Be has supported responsible tourism since its creation in 2006, following a series of guidelines in the organization of its trips that respect fair and long-term principles:
Training young Madagascans in foreign languages and as tour guides, with a focus on young people.
Raising environmental awareness among all Indigo Be direct and indirect employees.
Detailed information for travelers on how to respect the environment on the island.
Respect for local culture and particularities.
Support for local communities involved in the development of ecotourism and sustainable travel projects, as well as fair trade.
Involvement of our travelers in the local life of certain communities and ethnic groups isolated from urban centers, thanks to the contribution of materials that are difficult to obtain in these areas of the island.
Collaboration with entities such as the Akamasoa Association, founded by Father Pedro, which, since 1997, has helped over 25,000 people to improve their lives through education, health, integration into the world of work, etc...
We are implementing the 17 UN Sustainable Tourism Goals (SDGs):
The spirit of Indigo Be is the fruit of a creative, committed team and boundless curiosity; we offer atypical itineraries for authentic travelers with an exhaustive knowledge of the destinations we propose.
But above all, we're passionate about travel and nature, and love creating original experiences that transcend.
We imagine new ways of traveling that pave the way for unique and memorable experiences, whether for the love of adventure or unexpected encounters with unknown people. We're proud to have travelers who are up to the challenge: empathetic, curious, adept at traveling off the beaten track and open to the world.
TAILOR-MADE TRIPS
If you choose this option, we offer you a wide range of proposals that are 100% customizable. You can choose your departure date, length of trip or stay, accommodation category and add extensions or details that will make your trip a memorable experience.
Trips where the focus is on your preferences: adventure, comfort, wildlife, luxury, trekking, active travel, ethnic travel...
Madagascar, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Reunion Island, the Seychelles... our in-depth knowledge of the Vanilla Islands will help us create your ideal trip.
GROUP TOURS
In an increasingly individualistic world, scenes like these are invaluable. Over the years, we've learnedthat the best moments of a trip are always linked to experiences with people, be they locals, travelers or yourself.
Our group tours start on a specific day of the week. We offer weekly departures all year round on our "star" itineraries. The itinerary is designed in advance and includes specific accommodation for all travelers in the group. Places are guaranteed and everything is ready - all that's missing is you.
GROUP TRAVEL, INCLUDING FLIGHTS
These are our "signature trips", emblematic itineraries that have seduced us and that we want to share, year after year, with travellers like you, who wish to visit remote or inaccessible regions that involve a degree of "adventure", in some cases forgoing comfort.
These trips are aimed at travelers who want to explore unique natural spaces and get to know an ancestral culture such as that of the Malagasy, which is totally different from our own. However, these trips are not for everyone, as they require good physical condition, a spirit of sacrifice and the ability to adapt to overcome difficulties.
If you share our travel philosophy, one or other of these trips is for you.
ESCAPADES
If you don't have much time, we recommend lowering your expectations :). Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world, and the journeys are extremely long. The Lemurs & Whales or Lemurs & Baobabs combinations are ideal to launch you into a destination as immense as it is spectacular.
However, Mauritius, Rodrigues, Reunion and the Seychelles are ideal destinations for a short getaway due to their small size.
HONEY MOONS
If you're looking for an exceptional trip, but categorically refuse to lie under a coconut tree (at least every day :) ), opting for Madagascar is an excellent way to strike a balance and fulfill everyone's dreams, as you can combine activities, such as visiting its national parks in search of lemurs, with heavenly beaches.
On one of the islands of the Indian Ocean, you can lie back in a hammock, enjoy the pleasure of "dolce far niente", sunbathe to recharge your batteries or enjoy incredible hotels in unforgettable locations where you can write a new chapter in your love story.
Buddymoon, early moon or latermoon... if you want us to hit the nail on the head and help you design your dream trip, you couldn't be in better hands.
BEACH HOLIDAYS
Traveling to Madagascar to rest is not what we recommend at Indigo Be, but it' s ideal to combine any itinerary with a few days' rest or activity on one of the countless paradise beaches that surround the island.
Humpback whale watching in Sainte Marie, scuba diving in Nosy Tanikely, sailing in a vezo pirogue in Anakao or relaxing in the paradise of Nosy Tsarabanjina, trekking in the Masoala peninsula or on Reunion Island are just some of the experiences we can help you design. Thousands of kilometers of coastline await you. The Seychelles, Mauritius and Rodrigues are an ideal end to any trip to Madagascar or Reunion.
LUXURY TRAVEL
It's not just luxury travel, it's... luxury travel. When we're looking for unique, life-changing travel experiences, one of the best tools is the exclusivity that comes with first-class service.
Unforgettable activities in the most spectacular locations, stays in the most unlikely places or meetings with the right people to enrich your experience are special creations of our "Secrets by Indigo Be" team.
ADVENTURE
Reaching the most remote areas of the island requires a minimum of sacrifice, but the rewards are always unforgettable. Exploring hidden treasures is the priority of our adventure travels.
Cross the island from west to east on a fascinating road trip, reach the last animist villages, travel through the jungles of the east on board the last passenger train, navigate the waters of the Tsiribihina river, reach the summit of the Tsingys or the crater of the Piton de la Fournaise volcano... This is where your adventure begins.
TREKKING
To go any further, you'll have to get around on foot. And seeing the world from above often makes all the difference. Climbing the mountains of Andringitra or Marojejy, living with the animist tribes of Zafimaniry country, exploring the lush jungle of Masoala or penetrating the canyons of the little-known Makay massif - these are all experiences that can only be enjoyed on foot.
And let's not forget Reunion Island, the most trekking destination in the Indian Ocean: climb the Piton de Neiges, explore the Cirque de Mafate or the Piton de la Fournaise volcano.
ETHNICS
Today more than ever, the human factor determines our journey. A melting pot of ethnic groups and cultures, the island of Madagascar is home to more than 18 different ethnic groups of diverse racial origins. Peoples of Indo-Malay origin, Bantu ethnic groups from Africa, Swahili navigators...
Although all our trips have a strong ethnic component, these itineraries will bring you closer to what's essential, and enable you to experience intimate, unprecedented encounters that will remain forever engraved in our memories.
COMFORT
Our comfort tours include the most classic itineraries or those with an infrastructure that allows us to make a more comfortable trip without giving up on visiting the best national parks and reserves.
These are trips that bring us closer to a more reasoned, special and different experience, in line with our expectations. Personalizing your trip will allow you to discover places in a different way, more in line with your preferences and travel needs.
WILDLIFE
Madagascar is one of the world's 17 richest countries. Over the last decade, scientists have discovered 615 new species. The island is home to 5% of the world's flora and fauna. More than 80% of its species are endemic (6 species of baobab, 113 species of lemur, 1200 species of orchid...) which, combined with the diversity of existing habitats: tropical rainforest, mountains, savannah, wetlands, dry forest... make Madagascar an exceptional destination for lovers of flora and fauna.
Of course, all our itineraries include visits to national parks, but some of our proposals are entirely focused on discovering nature and biodiversity.
BEACHES, ISLANDS AND SAILBOATS
The Indian Ocean boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. Madagascar, with the Mitsio or Radames archipelagos featuring paradise islands such as Nosy Iranja, Nosy Be, Nosy Sakatia, Nosy Tanikely, Nosy Mitsio, Nosy Komba...which we will explore by catamaran or traditional schooner; deserted beaches such as Salary, Ambatomilo, Andavadoaka, Anakao, Ambola... pirate and privateer islands such as Sainte Marie and Masoala, whale and dolphin sanctuaries...
Mauritius, Rodrigues, Seychelles and Reunion... turquoise waters and white sands like a dream.
ACTIVE TRAVEL
All our trips to Madagascar are active, as nature safaris are always on foot, unlike on the rest of the continent. But on our active trips, sport takes center stage. Cycling, scuba diving, kite surfing, surfing, canyoning, paragliding... Combining visits to certain regions with our favorite sport is the key to this type of active travel.
They do not include trekking trips, as we believe that backpacking trips deserve a section of their own.
Our agency is a pure source of inspiration.
We're perfect hosts when it comes to introducing knowledge-hungry travelers to the island, and above all, we have a great vibe. Eric, Sylvia, Nadia, Sergi, Mamy, Frederic, Jaume, Parfait, Tovo, Mampi, Rafael, Hasina, Tony, Sanda, Maria, Santa, Farah, Nomena, and all those who are in training this year and will begin their journey as tour guides during 2024. Indigo Be is a big family waiting to welcome you to the island in the near future. Without them, nothing would be possible.
